First Aid becomes compulsory in schools

The Government has announced that health education will become compulsory in all state-funded schools in England from September 2020 and this includes basic first aid training.
The new 3-hour Ofqual regulated Level 2 Award in Student First Aid has been designed for key stage 3 and key stage 4 students (11+ years) and fulfills the requirements of the Department for Education in respect of first aid training.
Not only would secondary schools meet the statutory requirements for health education, but students would also have the opportunity to attain a nationally regulated qualification, enhance their CV and develop new life skills.
The Student First Aid qualification will provide learners with the skills and knowledge required to provide first aid treatment confidently and safely. In addition, the qualification fulfills the requirements of the Department for Education in respect of first aid training. Duration: A minimum of three contact hours in the classroom, consisting of practical and theoretical activities. Ideally, the course should be run over half a day (3 hours), but the syllabus can be divided into 3 x 1-hour sessions, spread over a 12-month period. Syllabus A range of subjects are covered including:- What is first aid? • Primary survey • Recovery position • Resuscitation and AED • Choking • Common Injuries • Anaphylaxis (optional) • Asthma (optional) Certification: The practical assessment is ongoing throughout the duration of the course and the learners will be required to complete a multiple-choice question assessment paper at the end of the programme. A three-year qualification can be offered to all, subject to assessment. Student Number: A maximum of 12 students are allowed and must be a minimum of 11 years of age.
