The new 'Standard for Seafarers' Mental Health Awareness and Wellbeing Training Course has been incorporated into our

RQF Level 3 Award:
Level 3 Award in Supervising First Aid for Mental Health (RQF)

Seafarers are employed in a unique environment which can subject them to extended periods of isolation, limited social interaction and long term separation from family and friends at home. Combined with additional contributory factors, mental health and wellbeing of seafarers can be adversely affected.

Quay Medical was a contributing member of a Seafaring Mental Health and Wellbeing Group was created (2019) from across the maritime sector to address the issue of mental health and wellbeing for seafarers. Amongst other stakeholders, the Group included private and commercial organisations, charities, and insurance companies.

This course covers a wider range of mental health conditions and goes into detail on the range of therapy and professional support that a seafarer may be given by professional bodies during treatment for a mental health condition. It also explores the creation of a 'mental health and well being care plan' for use on a vessel or a shore based workplace.

The course is suitable for all seafarers within a workplace but is aimed at those who hold a supervisory/managerial level position and who have responsibility for implementing a positive mental health culture and responsibility for First Aid for Mental Health within an organisation.
