Mental Health on Superyachts

This week sees the start of one of the best known superyacht gatherings in the world, the Monaco Yacht Show. A large number of captains and crew will come together throughout the four day show to rekindle friendship and share experiences. However, for some, there will be an underlying tide of stress and anxiety that will be hidden from the smiles and the ambient razzamatazz. It wont be talked about, it wont be mentioned and those crew members will carry on as if nothing was wrong. Why? because of the risk of discrimination and stigma attached to the subject of mental health at sea.

There are many causes and combinations of factors that can cause mental health issues for crew and being at sea and working long hours to satisfy the guests and colleagues and can only serve to exacerbate the problem unless there is help and support available. Every large yacht should have a 'mental health care plan' in place which can be used by trained mental health first aiders on board to support their colleagues during that time of need.

Do your yachts have mental health first aiders and a mental health care plan? It is highly likely that the answer is no! You should seek and invest in UK government 'Ofqual regulated' mental health first aid training from Quay Medical.

Our one/two days courses ashore or even on board can prepare captains and crew respond to mental health issues on board retaining the colleague cohesion that is so vital at sea. #superyachtmentalhealth
